In the Home Stretch

This is going to be an exciting year. After almost two years of work behind the scenes by the board and staff, it will be a year of new offerings—new member benefits, new member opportunities and a new member experience.

Already this year, we awarded the first IABC Foundation scholarships for certification. IABC Past Chair Sharon Hunter, SCMP, and I were thrilled to see this become a reality. Implementing these scholarships was a critical piece of our 2017–2020 strategy to make certification accessible to everyone.

Now it is time to create a movement. When you take a certification exam, you are testing yourself against the Global Stndard. Having a defined standard, and a way to test ourselves against it, is central to advancing our profession.

Download the Global Communication Certification Council (GCCC) certification handbook and flip to the job task analysis in the appendix. Use this to build job descriptions and set expectations for communicators at different levels of their careers—or for yourself. Share this information with your HR group and/or your leadership team. If we all carry the message back to our organizations, educate them on the results that communicators can drive and the skill sets they need, it will create a pull in the marketplace for our profession. We can create a movement, if we work together.

At Leadership Institute (LI), I spoke about the hard work of the IABC leaders who came before me. Because of them, we are in a position to roll out new member benefits and opportunities this year. One of the task forces being formed is focused on diversity and inclusion. This group will create a scorecard to chart progress for recruiting for international committees and the international executive board. They will review our processes, point out any roadblocks to participation and track our progress. We want to be transparent and intentional in our work to be more representative and hear all voices.

Also at LI, we honored two very special IABC leaders — we are fortunate to have the leadership of Regional Leader of the Year Alex Malouf, SCMP, past chair of EMENA, and our Chapter Leader of the Year, Kristy Christie, president of IABC Malaysia. We will continue to benefit from their work and influence for years to come.

As we move into the final quarter of the board year, please consider joining us at the 2019 IABC World Conference in Vancouver. Our masters of ceremony, Adam Brayford, SCMP, and Phoebe Dey, are sure to be a hit. The breakout speakers are creating a buzz and our keynotes—well, it’s a spectacular line-up. Plus, we will get to celebrate our two newest IABC Fellows at the Excellence Gala.

Thank you for allowing me to serve this year. It is a joy to be able to give back a small part of what I have received from this profession. I’m grateful. Grateful for our leaders around the world that make this organization work, grateful for the members who had a vision for what this organization could be and should be, and grateful for the encouragement you have given me. Of course, none of this would be possible without the hard work of staff. They are an amazing group with talent and a passion for our profession.
